Self-help

 

Per definition, self-help is an inner desire to define and develop personal values as a self-guided improvement.  For our purposes, we will define

Self-help

as your inner desire to define and develop your personal values, it is a self-guided improvement of your Self, mostly without the guidance and support of others (friends, family or professional help).

Wikipedia says: “Self-help, or self-improvement, is a self-guided improvement — economically, intellectually, or emotionally —
often with a substantial psychological basis.”  Well, some experts agree on that, some do not.

Experts also talk about self-help or self-improvement same as they talk about personal growth or personal development.  Truth is,
I could not find an exact definition and therefore, I’d like to use the description made above. By the way, feel free to send me your ideas, I’d love to hear them!

Have you ever felt disappointed, angry, perhaps even anxious or fearful about something that happened in your life, something that made you struggle? What was your first reaction? When ever something bad happens in life, first you tend to blame others for what happened to you, wouldn’t you agree?

Later then, you start searching for reasons why that happened to you. Almost instinctively, you start looking for some kind of help to get out of that situation. You don’t feel yet like telling others about what happened, you may feel ashamed or you just don’t want to bother your family or friends with that issue. You want to find a way of your own, you want to help yourself.

Next, you start asking yourself whether something you did or did not may have caused the trouble.  And your own answers will make you understand that you must get out of that situation. In order to achieve that you will have to change something in your behaviour, in your habits, your attitude. And, because you want to help yourself, you will want to find out how you can do that – you will search for self help tips and solutions. Another way to help yourself might be joining the right self-help groups where you can find people with similar issues and learn about their approach to helping themselves.

No matter what problem you’re facing, you have to decide whether to go for a solution or to stay where you are. To go forward needs your entire courage and commitment to help yourself.
