Let’s talk today about reality – and especially about people and why they watch “the reality” of Reality TV.
“Reality television (also known as reality show) is a television programming genre that presents unscripted and humorous situations, documents actual events and usually features ordinary people instead of professional actors.”

I don’t know about you, but if you watch TV no doubt you are aware of the Reality TV craze worldwide, not only in America. Reality TV has become amazingly popular throughout the countries, with Xmillions tuning in to their favorite reality show. New shows are being added to the “reality list” each year. And whether you like it or not, this is a phenomenon that is here to stay.
Purpose and addiction on Reality TV
As stated in the quote above, “great minds have great purposes”. Their purpose might be fame, might be money – or both. What ever drives them, they try to rise above all the other.
On the other hand, many people just have great wishes and dreams but for whatever reason, never get them realized. And from there, for both groups it’s only a small step to become addicted to these shows.
The short history of Reality TV
You may not have realized it, but Reality TV has been around for quite some time. Hard to believe, but the show started back in 1992 with “The Real World” on MTV. This was the beginning of Reality TV and it has progressed since then to become what we know.
“The Real World” was basically a show that had several people from a variety of different backgrounds live together, and their interactions among one another were filmed for people
to watch on TV.
In 2002, Reality TV was brought to new levels with the hit show “Survivor”, aired by CBS.
Since the success of “Survivor,” other networks have begun producing reality shows. Until now television is dominated by these shows.
Why People Love Reality TV
There are many reasons that people love Reality TV. And one of those reasons is the money. Shows that offer large sums of money are instant attention grabbers. Why? Simply because people love to watch other normal people win or lose large amounts of money.
Another reason that Reality TV has become such a big hit is because of the promise of instant fame. Many people dream of what it would be like to be on television and to be famous. Most of them don’t get that opportunity in their lives. So for normal people, Reality TV is an chance to live out their dream of fame.
Lastly, and to me this is key, people enjoy Reality TV because they have the pleasure of watching people fail and succeed.
What about you? Do you like watching Reality TV shows and if so, why? Let me know your thoughts.
